More information about Femseven Conti

About Femseven Conti

What is Femseven Conti?

Femseven Conti is a hormone replacement therapy (HRT) patch for postmenopausal women who are experiencing symptoms caused by lower oestrogen levels.

This weekly patch gradually releases hormones to help relieve symptoms such as hot flushes, night sweats, and sleep problems. Because it contains both oestrogen and progestogen, it also helps protect the lining of the womb, making it suitable for women who still have a womb.

At HealthExpress, we prescribe the 50 mcg/7 mcg Femseven Conti patch.

What’s the difference between Femseven Conti and standard Femseven?

Femseven comes in two main forms: the standard Femseven patch and Femseven Conti. The main difference is that the Femseven patches contain oestrogen only, while Femseven Conti combines oestrogen with a progestogen (levonorgestrel).

The added progestogen makes Femseven Conti more suitable for women who still have a womb, as it helps protect the womb lining during treatment. Your doctor will advise which option is most appropriate for you during your consultation.

How does Femseven Conti work?

Femseven works by releasing hormones through your skin which then bind to oestrogen receptors. These hormones work in two core ways to help ease symptoms of menopause:

  • Oestrogen: estradiol hemihydrate, a type of oestrogen, replaces the hormone lost during menopause, helping to reduce symptoms such as hot flushes and night sweats.
  • Progestogen: levonorgestrel, a progestogen, prevents excess thickening of the womb lining (endometrial hyperplasia). This helps protect the lining of the womb and reduces the risk of endometrial cancer.

How effective is Femseven Conti?

Femseven Conti is an effective HRT option for postmenopausal women to help manage symptoms of oestrogen deficiency.

One study involving 293 women showed significant improvements in vasomotor symptoms, sleep problems, sexual function, and cognitive difficulties, and no instances of endometrial hyperplasia.

Using Femseven Conti

How do I apply Femseven Conti patches?

Follow these instructions when putting on Femseven Conti patches:

  1. Choose a dry and hairless part of skin on the thigh or buttocks. Make sure the area will not be rubbed too much by clothing.
  2. Remove the patch from its pouch.
  3. Peel off half of the protective layer. Do not touch the sticky side.
  4. Apply the sticky part to your skin.
  5. Remove the other side of the protective layer, sticking the patch to your skin as you do so.
  6. Press the patch onto your skin for at least 30 seconds.

Change application sites weekly to avoid skin irritation. If you forget to apply a patch, apply it as soon as possible and your next one at the usual time. Do not use 2 patches at the same time.

How often should I use Femseven Conti?

Each Femseven Conti patch lasts for 7 days. Once this time has passed, remove your patch by peeling it off from the corner, and apply a new one to a different part of the skin (thigh or buttocks).

How long does Femseven Conti take to work?

Femseven Conti begins releasing hormones immediately after application, but it may take a few weeks to notice relief from menopause symptoms. Full effects are typically seen within 3 months. You can take Femseven Conti long term for extended periods of time.

What dosages are available?

Femseven Conti patches are available in one dose: 50 mcg/7 mcg. This refers to how much of each hormone is released every 24 hours. 50 mcg is a standard low dose of oestrogen. Your doctor may adjust your treatment if this dose does not adequately relieve symptoms.

Safety and precautions

Who can and cannot take Femseven Conti?

To be prescribed Femseven Conti, you must be a woman experiencing menopause. Femseven Conti can be prescribed to women who still have a womb, as the progestogen helps protect the womb lining.

If you do not have a womb, you may be prescribed regular Femseven instead.

Do not take Femseven Conti if you have:

  • an allergy to estradiol or any other ingredient found in this medicine
  • cancer that is sensitive to oestrogens
  • unexplained vaginal bleeding
  • untreated endometrial hyperplasia (excessive thickening of the womb lining)
  • ever had a blood clot or a disease caused by blood clotting
  • ever had liver disease and your liver function tests are abnormal
  • a blood clotting disorder
  • porphyria (a rare inherited disease)

What are the most common side effects of Femseven Conti?

HRT patches are generally tolerated better than oral treatments, but Femseven Conti can still cause side effects.

The most common Femseven Conti side effects include:

  • skin reactions (itching, redness, swelling)
  • breast tenderness
  • breast pain
  • bleeding or spotting
  • headache
  • indigestion

For a full list of Femseven Conti’s side effects, consult the patient information leaflet.

How safe is Femseven Conti?

Femseven Conti is considered safe provided you get a prescription from a licensed healthcare professional. It was approved for use in the UK in November 2002, and since then has been a trusted product for thousands who rely on it for effective HRT treatment.

Like all HRT treatments, Femseven Conti carries some risks. Speak with your doctor if you have conditions that increase your risk of blood clots or if you’re unsure about the safety of HRT.
