What is Kliofem?
Kliofem is a continuous combined HRT tablet manufactured by Novo Nordisk. It is used to treat menopause symptoms such as hot flushes and night sweats.
How does Kliofem work?
Kliofem contains two types of female hormones: oestrogen and progestogen. During the menopause, the amount of oestrogen in a woman’s body drops. This is what causes symptoms. Kliofem therefore supplements oestrogen levels to help treat these symptoms. The progestogen helps to protect the womb lining.
What are the benefits of Kliofem?
There are several benefits of using Kliofem. In addition to reducing the severity of menopause symptoms, it also offers several unique benefits.
- Bone health - it helps to maintain bone health, which prevents the risk of osteoporosis (a condition that causes weak bones).
- Womb protection - it contains a progestogen, which helps to protect the womb lining, reducing the risk of womb cancer.
- Convenience - Kliofem is available as a calendar pack, a little device that helps you remember to take your tablets each day.
Using Kliofem
What dose do I take?
Kliofem tablets contain 2 mg of estradiol and 1 mg of norethisterone. You take one tablet each day at roughly the same time.
How do I take Kliofem?
Kliofem is available as calendar packs. These are specialised disk-shaped devices organised by the days of the week to help you remember to take them daily.
How to use the Kliofem calendar pack:
- Set the day reminder by turning the inner disc to set the day of the week opposite the little plastic tab.
- Take the first day’s tablet by breaking the plastic tab and tipping out the first tablet.
- The next day, move the dial clockwise 1 space as indicated by the arrow. This releases the next tablet. Tip it out.
- You move the dial every day. You can only turn the dial once the tablet has been removed.
Ask your doctor or pharmacist to show you how to use it if you are not sure.
What happens if I miss a dose?
If you miss a dose, take it as soon as you remember. If it is more than 12 hours late, however, skip the missed dose and take the next tablet at the regularly scheduled time.
Safety and precautions
Who cannot use Kliofem?
Kliofem is safe for most women to relieve menopause symptoms.
Do not take Kliofem if you:
- are allergic to estradiol, norethisterone or any of the other ingredients
- have ever had breast cancer
- have a cancer which is sensitive to oestrogen, such as endometrial cancer (cancer of the womb)
- have any unexplained vaginal bleeding
- have excessive thickening of the womb lining (endometrial hyperplasia)
- have ever had a blood clot, such as in the legs or the lungs
- have a blood-clotting disorder
- have had a heart attack, stroke or angina (conditions caused by blood clotting)
- have a liver disease
- have a blood condition called porphyria
What are the most common side effects of Kliofem?
Common side effects of Kliofem include:
- headache
- migraine (new or worse than before)
- stomach pain
- back pain
- tender or painful breasts
- vaginal thrush (a fungal infection)
- feeling anxious, depressed or nervous
- feeling sick or vomiting
- irregular, light, heavy or painful periods
- weight gain caused by fluid retention
- swelling of the ankles, feet or fingers
- vaginal discharge or inflammation
- leg cramps

How safe is Kliofem?
Since its approval in the UK in 1995, Kliofem has been considered safe for most women, provided it’s prescribed by a licensed healthcare professional.
However, as with all HRT medicines, it can pose some risk. You should take special care if you have a condition that makes you more likely to get a blood clot. Speak with your doctor if you’re unsure about the safety of treatment with Kliofem.
