More information about Indivina

About Indivina

What is Indivina?

Indivina is a form ofhormone replacement therapy (HRT) tablets manufactured by Orion. It is used to treat menopause symptoms such as hot flushes and night sweats. It also helps to prevent osteoporosis. It is suitable for women who have not had a period for at least 3 years.

How does Indivina work?

Indivina contains two types of female hormones: oestrogen and progestogen. During the menopause, the amount of oestrogen in a woman’s body drops. This is what causes symptoms. Indivina therefore supplements oestrogen levels to help treat these symptoms. The progestogen helps to protect the womb lining.

What are the benefits of Indivina?

There are several benefits of using Indivina. As well as reducing the severity of menopause symptoms, it also has several unique benefits.

  • Bone health - it helps to maintain bone health, which prevents the risk of osteoporosis (a condition that causes weak bones).
  • Womb protection - it contains a progestogen, which helps to protect the womb lining, reducing the risk of cancer of the womb or endometrial cancer.
  • Convenience - Indivina is a once-daily tablet, making it easy to take.

Is Indivina the same as Premique Low?

No, Indivina contains different active ingredients to Premique Low which has since been discontinued. Indivina contains the oestrogen estradiol, whilst Premique Low contained conjugated equine oestrogens.

Using Indivina

What dose do I take?

Each Indivina tablet contains 1 mg of Estradiol (oestrogen) and 2.5 mg of progestogen (medroxyprogesterone). This is the lowest dose of Indivina, but your doctor may increase it if necessary.

The usual dose is one tablet each day. Always follow the guidance from your doctor or specialist.

When do I start Indivina?

You can start taking Indivina on any day if you have no periods and have not previously taken HRT, or you are switching from another continuous combined HRT.

If you are switching from a cyclic HRT regime, start Indivina one week after your last cyclic HRT tablet.

How do I take Indivina?

Take each tablet at roughly the same time each day. Each blister pack contains the days of the week to help you remember. Swallow each tablet whole with a drink.

What if I miss a dose?

If you forget to take a tablet, take it as soon as you remember. But if it’s nearly time for your next dose, skip the missed dose and continue as usual. Do not take a double dose to make up for it.

Safety and precautions

Who cannot use Indivina?

Indivina is safe for most women to relieve menopause symptoms. It is suitable for women who have not had a period in 3 years.

Do not take Indivina if you:

  • are allergic to estradiol, medroxyprogesterone or any of the other ingredients
  • have ever had breast cancer
  • have a cancer which is sensitive to oestrogen, such as endometrial cancer (cancer of the womb)
  • have any unexplained vaginal bleeding
  • have a blood-clotting disorder
  • have had a heart attack, stroke or angina (conditions caused by blood clotting)
  • have a liver disease
  • have a blood condition called porphyria
  • have bleeding on the brain

What are the most common side effects of Indivina?

Common side effects of Indivina include:

  • weight gain or swelling caused by fluid retention
  • depression or anxiety
  • lack of energy
  • headache
  • dizziness
  • hot flushes
  • increased sweating
  • feeling sick or vomiting
  • stomach cramps
  • breast pain
  • vaginal discharge
  • irregular vaginal bleeding

This is not a full list of side effects. Please refer to the patient information leaflet for a complete list of side effects.

How safe is Indivina?

Indivina is safe, provided you get a prescription from a licensed healthcare professional. It was approved for use in the UK in December 1999, and since then has been a trusted product for thousands who rely on it for effective HRT treatment.

However, as with all HRT medicines, it can pose some risk. You should take special care if you have a condition that makes you more likely to get a blood clot. Speak with your doctor if you’re unsure about the safety of treatment with Indivina.
