More information about Mometasone

What is Mometasone?

Mometasone, also known by the brand name Nasonex, is prescribed for the treatment and prevention of symptoms associated with hay fever (seasonal allergic rhinitis).

It can also be used to combat nasal allergies caused by other allergens such as pet fur and dust mites (perennial allergic rhinitis).

Mometasone contains the active ingredient mometasone furoate. This is a corticosteroid that reduces inflammation and provides relief from symptoms, including red or watery eyes, nasal congestion, sneezing, itching, runny nose and sinus discomfort.

How does it work?

In response to allergens, areas of your body can become inflamed. In turn, this causes the symptoms associated with allergies.

Our bodies produce corticosteroids naturally to control inflammatory responses. However, they often don’t produce enough to alleviate symptoms.

This treatment contains mometasone furoate, a synthetic corticosteroid.

The cells in the nasal lining absorb the spray, which stops them from producing chemicals that trigger inflammation.

Nasal polyps can also occur after an allergy or infection. These are small growths that can block the nose and make breathing difficult. If they do occur, Mometasone helps to decrease their size so you can breathe more easily.

How do I use this treatment?

There is only one dosage currently available. Each spray bottle contains 50mcg of mometasone furoate and 0.02mg of benzalkonium chloride.

Always follow the guidance of your doctor or pharmacist, and as directed by the patient leaflet.

A summary of how to use Mometasone follows:

  • for the treatment of polyps, adults aged 18 years and over should use two sprays in each nostril, once a day
  • for the treatment of allergies, you should use two sprays in each nostril, once daily
  • start using this spray a few days before exposure to allergens such as pet fur or pollen
  • always use the lowest possible dose to control and relieve your symptoms

If you have any questions about how to use this product, please contact your doctor or pharmacist.

What are the possible side effects?

All medication poses a risk of side effects; however, Mometasone is relatively safe, with only a small percentage of users reporting issues.

The most commonly reported adverse effects include:

  • headache
  • altered sense of taste
  • altered sense of smell
  • changes in voice
  • epistaxis (nosebleeds)
  • nasal irritation
  • throat irritation

If you are concerned about any side effects, speak to your doctor.

Please note, if this medicine is used for a prolonged period at high doses, side effects similar to oral corticosteroids may occur.

What precautions should I take?

You should tell your doctor or pharmacist if you are taking or have recently taken any other medicines, including non-prescription drugs.

You should also make sure to include this information in your online consultation. This is so our doctors can ensure the treatment is safe for your use.

You should not take this medicine if any of the following apply to you:

  • you suffer from pulmonary tuberculosis
  • you have any untreated nasal infections

If you are taking other corticosteroid medicines for allergy, your doctor may advise you to stop taking them before you use Mometasone.

Please note, if you stop taking other corticosteroids, you may notice an initial worsening of symptoms, as well as muscle pain and fatigue.

Any unused spray should be discarded two months after opening the bottle, to avoid contamination with dirt or bacteria.

Although only small amounts of this medicine pass into the bloodstream, the safety of this nasal spray for use during pregnancy and breastfeeding has not yet been established. Therefore, you should seek advice from your doctor before using this medicine if you are pregnant, trying to conceive or breastfeeding.
