More information about Mysimba

What is Mysimba?

Mysimba is an effective weight loss treatment. It should be combined with a reduced-calorie diet and exercise.

Mysimba can only be used by adults who are obese (have a body-mass index of 30 or above), or who are overweight (have a BMI of 27 or above) and have certain weight-related health complications, such as diabetes or high blood pressure.

Many factors can make losing weight difficult. Mysimba alters the way your body regulates appetite and makes exercise more effective, helping you to achieve a healthy BMI.

How does it work?

Mysimba contains two active ingredients, bupropion and naltrexone. When combined, these drugs interact with the nervous system and work to suppress appetite and increase energy expenditure. This means you feel less hungry on a low-calorie diet, and the food you do eat is burned more efficiently during exercise.

As mentioned, for Mysimba to have the desired effects, diet and exercise is necessary.

You should consult a doctor or health professional for information on how to lead a healthy lifestyle (including exercise and dietary techniques).

How do I take Mysimba?

You should always follow the advice of your doctor when taking any new medication.

It is important to follow the dosage instructions carefully for Mysimba to have the full effects:

  • Week 1- one tablet should be taken daily for seven days
  • Week 2 - two tablets taken daily for seven days.
  • Week 3 - you should take three tablets daily for seven days - two should be taken in the morning, and one in the evening
  • Week 4 - you should take four tablets daily, two in the morning, two in the evening

You should have your progress reviewed by your doctor after 16 weeks. If you continue treatment beyond this period, you should have your progress reviewed at least annually.

Treatment should also be stopped if patients have not lost at least 5% of their initial body weight after 16 weeks of treatment.

You should take doses with food. Do not crush, break or split tablets.

What are the possible side effects?

Assuming you do not suffer from any of the conditions that preclude its use, Mysimba rarely results in side effects. However, some of the most common that do occur include:

  • nausea
  • vomiting
  • constipation
  • dizziness
  • dry mouth
  • abdominal pain
  • headache
  • insomnia (reduce by avoiding dose at bedtime)

These reactions should not be long-lasting and should lessen as your body adapts to the medication.

However, if you experience these (or any reactions not listed) for a prolonged period, or they are particularly distressing or dangerous, stop treatment and consult your doctor.

For a full list of possible side effects, please read the patient leaflet or consult a doctor.

If you believe you are experiencing an allergic reaction to Mysimba, you should discontinue treatment and seek immediate medical attention.

If you experience depression or any suicidal thoughts, you should stop treatment and seek immediate medical advice.

What precautions should I take?

Mysimba is a prescription medication that alters the way your central nervous system functions. Due to this, it can have serious complications if you suffer from any of the following conditions.

You should not use Mysimba if you have:

  • liver or kidney issues
  • uncontrolled high blood pressure
  • history of psychological issues
  • a brain tumour
  • alcohol dependency
  • any drug dependency
  • are taking any opiates
  • history of seizures
  • history of head trauma

For further advice on what conditions preclude you from using Mysimba, please consult the patient leaflet.

You should not take this medication if you are pregnant, breastfeeding or planning to conceive.

It is not advised to take Mysimba if you are over 75 years of age.

Mysimba can cause dizziness when patients first start treatment. It has also been known to cause seizures. For this reason, you should first consider how you react before driving or operating machinery.

Can I buy Mysimba online?

You can buy Mysimba online from HealthExpress, once you have completed a consultation and our doctors have approved. When completing the consultation, you should detail all your medical history (it is entirely confidential) to ensure the treatment is safe for your use. If based in mainland UK, your order will be delivered the next working day.
