I had a lot of trouble with reordering from the website. At the final stage the site was endlessly buffering. I accessed my account again from a different web browser and the same thing happened. The online chat wasn’t much help, advising me to delete my history and try again - no joy. Then I was asked to call the helpline. When I did this I was informed there was no one available and asked to leave a message, which I did. No one called back. It was only on the second occasion that I got through to a person who confirmed my order. In the days following I was bombarded by electronic emails telling me I had an incomplete order (which I didn’t) and asking if a needed help (!)

Your questions answered

More information about Oestrogel

About Oestrogel

What is Oestrogel?

Oestrogel is a type of HRT gel manufactured by Besins Healthcare. It helps to improve menopausal symptoms such as hot flushes, night sweats and vaginal dryness by helping to balance your hormone levels.

How does Oestrogel work?

Oestrogel contains estradiol, which is a form of the reproductive hormone oestrogen. During menopause, oestrogen levels fall, which is what causes symptoms. Oestrogel therefore works by restoring your oestrogen levels, reducing these symptoms.

What are the benefits of Oestrogel?

As well as reducing menopause symptoms, Oestrogel has several unique benefits:

  • Fewer side effects - the medicine is absorbed into the skin, bypassing the liver, which can help reduce the risk of serious side effects.
  • Non-greasy - the gel is discreet and colourless, with no residue once dry.
  • Good for sensitive skin - no patch adhesive, useful for women who react to patches.

Does Oestrogel contain progesterone?

No. If you still have a womb, you’ll also need a progestogen to protect the womb lining while using Oestrogel. This is to help prevent the womb lining from thickening, which can increase the risk of womb cancer.

Using Oestrogel

What dose do I take?

Each pump of Oestrogel contains 750 mcg of estradiol. The usual dose is 2 pumps (1.5 mg of estradiol) once daily. You can use up to 4 pumps daily if needed. If you have a womb, you must take cyclical progestogen alongside oestrogel to protect the womb lining.

How do I apply Oestrogel?

Apply Oestrogel once daily, either in the morning or evening. You should apply it at the same time each day.

  1. You can apply the gel in two places, either your shoulders and outer arms on both arms or the mid-inner thigh of both legs.
  2. Do not apply on or near the breasts nor near the genital area.
  3. Once applied, let the gel absorb for 5 minutes before getting dressed. Avoid letting anyone touch where the gel was applied for an hour.
  4. Wash your hands with soap and water after applying the gel.

What happens if I miss a dose?

If you forget to use Oestrogel and it is more than 12 hours until your next dose, apply the gel as soon as you remember and apply the next dose at the regular time. If it is less than 12 hours until your next dose, skip the missed dose and use Oestrogel at the usual time.

How do I know when my Oestrogel pump is empty?

You will know your Oestrogel pump is nearly empty when the plunger does not return to its original position after you have pushed it down. When this happens, do not use the pump any longer. Start using a new one.

Safety and precautions

Who cannot use Oestrogel?

Oestrogel is safe for most women to use to relieve menopause symptoms.

Do not use Oestrogel if you have:

  • ever had breast cancer
  • a cancer which is sensitive to oestrogen, such as endometrial cancer (cancer of the womb)
  • any unexplained vaginal bleeding
  • a blood-clotting disorder
  • had a heart attack, stroke or angina (conditions caused by blood clotting)
  • a liver disease or irregular liver function test results
  • an inherited blood condition called porphyria

What are the most common side effects of Oestrogel?

Common side effects of Oestrogel include:

  • headache
  • nausea
  • stomach pain
  • breast pain
  • painful periods
  • heavier and longer periods
  • irregular periods
  • white or yellow vaginal discharge
  • weight changes

This is not a full list of side effects. Please refer to the patient information leaflet for a complete list of side effects.

How safe is Oestrogel?

Oestrogel is safe, provided you get a prescription from a licensed healthcare professional. It was approved for use in the UK in November 1997, and since then has been a trusted product for thousands who rely on it for effective HRT treatment.

However, as with all HRT medicines, it can pose some risk. You should take special care if you have a condition that makes you more likely to get a blood clot. Speak with your doctor if you’re unsure about the safety of treatment with Oestrogel.
