I had a lot of trouble with reordering from the website. At the final stage the site was endlessly buffering. I accessed my account again from a different web browser and the same thing happened. The online chat wasn’t much help, advising me to delete my history and try again - no joy. Then I was asked to call the helpline. When I did this I was informed there was no one available and asked to leave a message, which I did. No one called back. It was only on the second occasion that I got through to a person who confirmed my order. In the days following I was bombarded by electronic emails telling me I had an incomplete order (which I didn’t) and asking if a needed help (!)

Your questions answered

More information about Sandrena

About Sandrena

What is Sandrena gel?

Sandrena is a type of HRT manufactured by Orion. It is available in the form of a gel that comes in single-use sachets. It helps to improve menopausal symptoms such as hot flushes, night sweats and vaginal dryness by helping to balance your hormone levels.

Does Sandrena contain progesterone?

No, Sandrena only contains oestrogen. You will need to take a progesterone if you have a womb to stop the lining of the womb from thickening too much. This helps to reduce the risk of cancer of the womb (endometrial cancer).

How does Sandrena work?

Sandrena contains estradiol, which is a synthetic form of the reproductive hormone oestrogen. During menopause, oestrogen levels fall, which is what causes symptoms. Sandrena therefore works by restoring your oestrogen levels, reducing these symptoms.

What are the benefits of Sandrena gel?

There are several benefits of using Sandrena. As well as reducing the severity of menopause symptoms, it has a lower risk of side effects compared to oral HRT. This is because it is absorbed into the skin, bypassing the digestive system and the liver.

Using Sandrena

When do I start Sandrena?

You can start Sandrena straight away if you have never used HRT or you are changing from a period-free HRT. If you are changing from a HRT that causes a period, you should wait for your period to end before starting Sandrena. .

How much Sandrena gel should I use?

Each Sandrena sachet contains 1 mg of the gel. The typical dose is one sachet per day (1 mg). But you can use 0.5 - 1.5 mg daily. .

Always follow the instructions from your doctor or specialist..

How do I apply Sandrena gel?

You apply Sandrena gel directly to the skin.

  1. Apply the gel to your lower body or thighs. Try to switch sides each day.
  2. Spread the gel over an area of skin that is 1-2 times the size of your hand.
  3. Allow the gel to dry for a few minutes.
  4. Wash your hands after applying the gel. Avoid getting the gel in your eyes as it can cause irritation.
  5. Do not let anyone touch the area of the skin where the gel was applied until it has dried.

Allow the gel to absorb before showering, swimming or doing heavy exercise.

What happens if I miss a dose?

If you are less than 12 hours late, apply the gel as soon as you remember. If you are more than 12 hours late, skip the missed dose and take the next dose at the usual time. Missing doses may cause bleeding between periods (breakthrough bleeding).

Safety and precautions

Who cannot use Sandrena?

Sandrena gel is safe for most women to use to relieve menopause symptoms.

Do not use Sandrena gel if you have:

  • ever had breast cancer
  • a cancer which is sensitive to oestrogen, such as endometrial cancer (cancer of the womb)
  • any unexplained vaginal bleeding
  • a blood-clotting disorder
  • had a heart attack, stroke or angina (conditions caused by blood clotting)
  • a liver disease or irregular liver function test results
  • an inherited blood condition called porphyria
  • bleeding on the brain

What are the most common side effects of Sandrena?

Common side effects of Sandrena gel include:

  • itchy skin or rashes
  • increased sweating
  • swollen feet and lower legs
  • tender or painful breasts
  • weight changes
  • headache
  • dizziness
  • stomach pain
  • feeling sick
  • depression or nervousness
  • hot flushes
  • bleeding or spotting

This is not a complete list. For a full list of side effects, please refer to the patient information leaflet.

How safe is Sandrena?

Sandrena gel is safe, provided you get a prescription from a licensed healthcare professional. It was approved for use in the UK in November 1996, and since then has been a trusted product for thousands who rely on it for effective HRT treatment.

However, as with all HRT medicines, it can pose some risk. You should take special care if you have a condition that makes you more likely to get a blood clot. Speak with your doctor if you’re unsure about the safety of treatment with Sandrena gel.
