What is Trimovate?
Trimovate is a topical medication, available as a cream or ointment, that effectively treats several skin conditions.
It is most commonly prescribed for:
- Tinea corporis (Ringworm)
- Tinea cruris (Jock Itch)

- Intertrigo
- Impetigo

Trimovate is highly effective due to its combination of three active ingredients. Its triple-action formula helps reduce inflammation while combating both fungal and bacterial infections. When used as directed, Trimovate reduces uncomfortable symptoms such as itching and burning, while also preventing the further spread of infection.
How does Trimovate work?
Trimovate is unique in that it contains 3 active ingredients: a topical steroid, an antibacterial and an antifungal. These work cumulatively to tackle all aspects of skin infections.
- Clobetasone butyrate is a corticosteroid. Corticosteroids are naturally-occurring hormones produced in your adrenal glands. They suppress an overactive immune system and reduce inflammation.
- Calcium oxytetracycline is an antibiotic. It works by targeting bacterial infections, preventing bacterial cells from reproducing. Your body can then fight off the infection more effectively.
- Nystatin is an antifungal. Antifungals work in a similar way to an antibiotic, except that they target fungal and yeast infections. Nystatin forces holes in the cell membrane (walls) of fungus, killing it.
How does Trimovate work for fungal skin infections?
Trimovate's antifungal ingredient, Nystatin, is the main agent that targets and eliminates the fungal infection. The antibiotic in Trimovate helps prevent bacterial growth, allowing your body to combat the infection. Meanwhile, the steroid provides topical relief by reducing inflammation and soothing itchiness.
How do I use Trimovate cream?
You should always follow the advice of your doctor or pharmacist when taking any medication.
Trimovate cream should be applied 1 - 2 times a day until the infection for up to 7 days. If your symptoms have not improved after 7 days, please consult your doctor.
Below are a brief set of instructions on how to apply Trimovate cream:
- wash and dry your hands before and after applying cream
- if someone else is applying the cream, they should wash their hands thoroughly or wear disposable gloves
- apply a thin layer to the affected area(s) and gently rub into the skin until it has all disappeared (consult the graphic below for the correct amount)
- avoid wearing tight clothing over areas of skin where you are applying treatment
- if you need to use a dressing, ensure the skin is clean before applying it as to not increase the risk of infection
- if you forget a dose, do not apply extra - this will increase the likelihood of side effects
- only apply cream to your face if instructed to do so by a doctor - avoid getting it in your eyes

What are the possible side effects of Trimovate?
All medications can cause side effects. Thankfully, most of the common side effects of Trimovate are mild and go away on their own.
As a topical corticosteroid, the most common side effect of Trimovate is mild skin reactions, including telangiectasia (spider veins), stinging, burning, sun sensitivity or an allergic reaction at the site of application.
If steroid creams are used for a prolonged period (longer than recommended) or under airtight clothing, you may experience the following symptoms:
- weight gain
- moon face/rounding of the face
- skin thinning
- skin depigmentation
- increased body hair growth (hirsutism)
If your condition does not improve after 7 days of use or worsens, you should stop treatment and contact your doctor.
Steroid withdrawal reaction
If Trimovate or any topical corticosteroid is stopped suddenly after a prolonged period of use, you may experience some adverse effects such as:
- skin redness that may extend beyond the initial affected area
- burning or stinging sensation
- intense itching
- skin peeling
- oozing open sores
If you’re concerned about steroid withdrawal or you wish to stop using Trimovate, consult your doctor or dermatologist before doing so.
Who can use it?

Not all skin conditions have the same cause. You should only use Trimovate as instructed by your doctor, as it can make certain skin conditions worse.
Do not use Trimovate cream to treat:
- acne
- rosacea
- viral infections such as genital herpes, cold sores, shingles or chickenpox (herpes simplex virus and herpes zoster virus)
- fungal infections like ringworm, athlete’s foot or thrush
- undiagnosed skin conditions
- cuts, grazes, and other lesions (unless instructed otherwise by a qualified medical professional)
If you are pregnant, trying for a child or breastfeeding, you should consult with your doctor before starting this treatment.
What precautions should I take?
You should tell your prescriber if you are taking any other medications or suffer from any other health issues before starting Trimovate. This is so that they can rule out any possible interactions. For example, certain medicines will make Trimovate less effective such as:
- ritonavir - used to treat HIV infection
- itraconazole - an antifungal
Do not go near fire or naked flames when using this product. It is very flammable, and the residue can remain on your clothes.
Certain ingredients in Trimovate (e.g. cetostearyl alcohol) may cause local skin reactions. Make sure to read the patient leaflet before use.
If you are applying cream to your face, be careful not to get it in your eyes. If you do, wash out with water.
Please note - this product can cause a sensitivity to sunlight. Wear sunscreen when outside and avoid sunlamps.
