Vesicare FAQs

What is Vesicare?

Vesicare (solifenacin) is a clinically proven medication to help reduce and stop urinary incontinence. Medically known as a muscarinic receptor antagonist, Vesicare can relax muscle spasms keeping the uncomfortable symptoms of incontinence at bay.

Whilst the usual style of incontinence is pads placed in your underwear, medication offers a subtler and more clinically effective approach to an overactive bladder.

How does Vesicare work?

As your bladder fills, it expands, triggering a message to the brain telling you to go to the toilet. Your bladder then contracts causing you to urinate. If you have urinary incontinence, your bladder contracts before it expands causing the symptoms of the condition.

The active ingredient solifenacin belong to the group known as antimuscarinics and all work in the same way to treat urinary incontinence. Solifenacin prevents these spasms by relaxing the muscle cells, making the bladder more effective at retaining urine and preventing urine leaks. This means you'll not feel the urgency to go, you won't need to urinate so often and you won't experience leaking.

What are the benefits of Vesicare?

The active ingredient, solifenacin, has been clinically proven to improve the awkward symptoms of incontinence and aims to reduce urinary urgency and increase bladder capacity.

By reducing these muscle spasms, you may also find your bladder at more ease. All of these factors make you more comfortable and increases your confidence.

How to take Vesicare

Available in tablet form, the starting recommended dosage of Vesicare is 5mg to be taken daily. This can be increased to 10mg if the symptoms haven't improved. The course of treatment will usually last for four weeks, and should be completed in its entirety unless a doctor advises you otherwise.

  • One tablet to be taken once a day
  • Swallow with liquid whole
  • Medication can be taken with or without food
  • Take at the same time every day

All of our medication comes with a certified patient information leaflet that should be read fully before starting the treatment. The leaflet is also available at the bottom of the page as a downloadable PDF.

What dosages are available for Vesicare?

The tablets are available to buy in 5mg and 10mg, depending on the severity of the condition for you. Typically, you will be offered the lower mg first and offered 10mg if the symptoms haven't improved.

What are the side effects of Vesicare?

Like all prescription medications, Vesicare comes with a risk of side effects. In most cases, these reactions are mild and are usually temporary, with a large percentage of people not experiencing any side effects whatsoever. Possible side effects include:

  • A sensitive stomach
  • Drowsiness
  • Constipation
  • Dry mouth
  • Dry eyes
  • Headache
  • Blurred vision

Severe side effects includes any of the above that are unmanageable or prolonged, as well as signs of a kidney infection such as frequent urinating, fever or blood in the urine. If you're experiencing any severe side effects, or any symptoms linked to a allergic reaction, you should stop taking the medication immediately and seek medical help.

It's always recommended that you read the patient Information Leaflet before beginning a course of treatment.
