Wegovy is an easy, once-weekly injection that helps reduce your appetite and supports long-term weight loss. Wegovy is popular for also offering health and lifestyle benefits.
The active ingredient in Wegovy is semaglutide. It works by increasing levels of a hormone called GLP-1. Increasing GLP-1 levels slows down digestion and stomach emptying. This affects your appetite because you feel fuller for longer, which means you eat less.
Wegovy is the same as Ozempic, they both contain semaglutide. However, only Wegovy is licensed as a weight loss treatment. Ozempic is licensed instead as a treatment for type 2 diabetes. Wegovy is available in more dosages and higher strengths than Ozempic.
Wegovy has been approved to reduce the risk of major cardiovascular events. A recent study shows that Wegovy 20% reduced the risk of heart attack and stroke¹. It also helps lower the risk of serious kidney problems in type 2 diabetes with kidney disease².
If you’re using oral contraceptives, it’s good to know that clinical tests confirm that Wegovy does not affect oral contraceptives, unlike some other weight loss medications.
Clinical studies show that with Wegovy, you can lose up to 17% of your body weight in 15 months³, and up to 21% with the 7.2 mg dose (step up)⁴.

The 7.2 mg dose of Wegovy delivers weight-loss results comparable to Mounjaro 15 mg. In a clinical trial, 47% of people taking Wegovy 7.2 mg lost more than 20% of their starting weight, compared with 57% of those treated with Mounjaro 15 mg. Looking at these results, the 15 mg dose of Mounjaro still offers greater weight loss results than 7.2 mg of Wegovy. However, treatment outcomes depend on individual health factors and responses to treatment.
Choose an injection site: upper arms, upper legs, or stomach.
You can use the same area for each injection, but keep each injection at least 5 cm apart.
Turn the dose selector until the dose counter shows your prescribed dose.
Always use a new needle and push it onto the pen until it is fully secure.
Remove the pen cap, insert the needle, and press the button to deliver the dose.
Hold until you hear the click, then remove the needle and dispose of it safely.
The 7.2 mg Wegovy dose is administered through three 2.4 mg pens, injected one after another, once weekly. Leave at least 5 cm between injections and use a new needle for each one. Please note that a single 7.2 mg pen may be sent instead, in which case you will only need to inject yourself once weekly.

Wegovy is taken once a week as an injection. The dose is gradually increased from 0.25 mg to 2.4 mg (maintenance) to help your body adjust and reduce side effects.
After at least 4 weeks on 2.4 mg, you may consider stepping up to 7.2 mg if additional weight loss is needed and 2.4 mg was well tolerated.
To be prescribed the 7.2 mg dose of Wegovy, you must have been taking the 2.4 mg dose for at least 4 weeks. This ensures you can handle the lower dose before increasing it further. The 7.2 mg dose of Wegovy is prescribed when the 2.4 mg dose hasn’t been enough to cause significant weight loss in obese patients.

Yes, if you are currently taking Mounjaro, you can switch to Wegovy. You can choose a similar dose or start again on the lowest dose of Wegovy. For example, if you are currently using the 5 mg dose of Mounjaro, you can take the 0.5 mg dose or go up to the 1 mg dose of Wegovy. You must wait at least 7 days after your last dose of Mounjaro before starting Wegovy.
No, you must start on the 0.25 mg dose of Wegovy if it is your first time or you have not used it in a while. This is to ensure your body can get used to the medicine and minimise side effects.
You do not have to increase the dose of Wegovy each time. The dose is increased gradually to allow your body time to adjust, and for some this may take longer. Everyone’s tolerance is different — some patients remain on lower doses, while others move up to the maximum. Our clinicians and nutritionist support help guide you to the right maintenance dose for your body.
As of 6 January 2026, the UK medicines regulator, MHRA, approved the 7.2 mg dose of Wegovy for weight loss. This offers new possibilities for weight loss in patients who have not responded well to lower doses of the popular GLP-1 medication. Although it has not yet been adopted by the NHS, and can only be obtained through a private healthcare provider.
You should experience little to no pain if you inject Wegovy correctly. It should feel like a small pinching sensation as the needle goes into the skin. However, you may experience an injection site reaction after you use Wegovy, such as redness, swelling or itching. Make sure you rotate the injection spot each time and clean it before injecting to limit skin reactions.
Like all prescription medicines, Wegovy can cause some side effects, although not everyone gets them. Common side effects include diarrhoea, dizziness, tiredness, feeling sick and being sick. These common side effects should go away on their own after your body gets used to the medicine. If your side effects do continue, you may need to stay on your current dose a bit longer. If you experience any serious side effects, such as severe abdominal pain, stop taking it.
There are no unique side effects of the 7.2 mg dose of Wegovy, but the risk of experiencing them is increased compared to the lower doses. According to a STEP UP trial, the most common side effects of Wegovy 7.2 mg are nausea, diarrhoea, vomiting, dysaesthesia (unusual sensations), and constipation.
You should start to notice a change in your appetite within the first week. In terms of weight loss, you should notice after 12 weeks a 6% weight loss. You should expect significant results after 15 months, with patients losing at least 17% of their body weight ³.
You can usually continue using Wegovy at the maintenance dose until you have reached your goal weight and feel confident enough to stop using it, unless your BMI goes below 20. This allows you to continue developing your lifestyle habits at your new weight, ensuring ultimate success as you transition from treatment.
Yes, but in moderation. Alcohol can make side effects like nausea worse and slow down digestion. Alcohol can also damage your weight loss efforts, as it is high in calories and sugar with little nutritional value.
A good target is around 2 litres daily. Staying hydrated supports digestion, prevents constipation, and reduces side effects. Herbal teas, diluted squash, or sparkling water all count.
Yes — in fact, it’s recommended. Exercise not only boosts weight loss but also helps preserve muscle mass and improve mood. If you’re new to exercise, start small: brisk walking, swimming, yoga, or light weights. As you feel stronger, you can build up gradually.
