I had a lot of trouble with reordering from the website. At the final stage the site was endlessly buffering. I accessed my account again from a different web browser and the same thing happened. The online chat wasn’t much help, advising me to delete my history and try again - no joy. Then I was asked to call the helpline. When I did this I was informed there was no one available and asked to leave a message, which I did. No one called back. It was only on the second occasion that I got through to a person who confirmed my order. In the days following I was bombarded by electronic emails telling me I had an incomplete order (which I didn’t) and asking if a needed help (!)

More information about Estradot

About Estradot

What is Estradot?

Estradot is a transdermal hormonal patch manufactured by Sandoz that’s used to relieve symptoms of menopause like hot flush, night sweats, vaginal dryness, sleep problems, and low mood. Unlike other HRT treatments that contain two hormones to ease menopausal symptoms, Estradot patches only contain oestrogen. Because of this, it is typically only prescribed to women who do not have a womb, or if a progestogen is prescribed alongside it.

How does Estradot work?

Estradot patches work by binding to specific oestrogen receptors in the body to replace natural oestrogen that decreases during menopause. It does this through its active ingredient, estradiol, which is a synthetic version of oestrogen. With hormone levels stabilised, symptoms of menopause are reduced and balance restored.

What are the benefits of Estradot?

Estradot patches offer several health benefits. As well as greatly reducing the severity of menopausal symptoms, HRT with Estradot can reduce your risk of osteoporosis by maintaining the strength of your bones. They also carry a lower risk of blood clotting than oral HRT, although some risk remains. In addition to its health benefits, it’s translucent, allowing for discreet and noninvasive treatment.

Using Estradot

How do I apply Estradot patches?

To apply Estradot patches correctly, follow these instructions:

  1. Open the pouch and take out the patch. You must apply it as soon as you open the pouch.
  2. Peel off one side of the protective layer on the back of your patch.
  3. Apply the sticky part of the patch to a smooth, dry part of your skin below your waist, ideally your thigh or bottom.
  4. Pull off the other side of the protective layer, applying the sticky part to your skin as you do so.
  5. Press down firmly on the patch for 10 seconds.
  6. Avoid applying patches to the same area too often to avoid skin irritation.

How long does each Estradot patch last?

You should replace your patch every 3-4 days, using a total of 2 patches per week. You should always wear a patch to maintain steady levels of oestrogen.

What if a patch falls off?

If your patch falls off, apply a new one straight away. Replace this patch on the same day you would have replaced the one that fell off.

What dosages are available?

Estradot patches are available in 37.5 mcg, 50 mcg, 75 mcg, and 100 mcg doses. This is the amount of estradiol (oestrogen) released every 24 hours. The standard dose is 50 mcg, but you may be prescribed more or less depending on individual factors and your response to treatment.

Safety and precautions

Who cannot use Estradot?

To use Estradot patches, you must be a woman who has been through menopause, and you must have had a hysterectomy (removal of the womb). You can still be prescribed Estradot if you have not undergone this procedure, but you will be prescribed a progestogen alongside it to reduce the risk of endometrial cancer.

Do not use Estradot if you:

  • are allergic to any ingredient found in this medicine
  • have ever had a cancer sensitive to oestrogen
  • experience abnormal vaginal bleeding
  • have a severe liver disease
  • have a condition affecting blood clotting
  • have ever had heart attack or stroke
  • have had several miscarriages
  • are pregnant or breastfeeding
  • have depression not controlled by treatment

What are the most common side effects of Estradot?

Estradot side effects include:

  • headaches
  • unexpected vaginal bleeding
  • breast pain or tenderness
  • mood changes
  • feeling sick (nausea)
  • diarrhoea
  • mild rash or itching
  • hair loss
  • leg cramps

This is not an exhaustive list. For a full list of Estradot’s side effects, consult the patient information leaflet.

How safe is Estradot?

Estradot is safe provided you get a prescription from a licensed healthcare professional. It was approved for use in the UK in April 2002, and since then has been a trusted product for thousands who rely on it for effective HRT treatment.

However, as with all HRT medicines, it can pose some risk. You should take special care if you still have a womb or you have a condition that makes you more likely to get a blood clot. Speak with your doctor if you’re unsure about the safety of treatment with Estradot.
