Fucidin Cream is used to treat bacterial skin infections, in particular those caused by staphylococcal bacteria. These include the following:
Fucidin Cream contains the active ingredient fusidic acid. This is an antibiotic that clears up the infection.
Fucidin Cream is only available on prescription from your doctor and you should not give your medicine to anyone else to use, even if they have similar symptoms.
Fucidin Cream contains the active ingredient fusidic acid. This is a type of medicine called an antibiotic.
Fusidic acid prevents the bacteria responsible for the infection from producing essential proteins. Without these proteins, the bacteria are unable to replicate or grow. Because they are unable to increase in number, they are eventually destroyed by the immune system or die off, clearing the infection.
If the area of skin infected is also inflamed, your doctor may prescribe a cream such as 'Fucidin H', which contains the anti-inflammatory ingredients hydrocortisone as well as fusidic acid, or 'Fucibet', which contains betamethasone.
If your infection does not seem to be improving despite treatment or it's getting worse, you should consult your doctor. If the infection recurs after you stop using Fucidin Cream, you should seek medical advice.
There is only one dosage available for Fucidin Cream. Fucidin Cream contains fusidic acid Ph.Eur. 20 mg/g. This cream is only available on prescription from your doctor and comes in a 15g or 30g tube.
Not everyone who uses this medicine will experience side effects. Side effects that have been commonly reported include: skin irritation such as stinging, burning and redness at the point of application; rash; eczema; or, contact dermatitis.
Less common side effects include: skin blistering; hives; conjunctivitis; and, allergic reactions. If you experience these or any other side effects that concern you, stop using the cream and consult your doctor.
Because fusidic acid is not absorbed into the bloodstream in significant quantities, Fucidin Cream is not known to interact with any other medicines. However, you should tell your doctor if you are taking any other medicines, including over-the-counter medicines and herbal remedies.
If you are using any other creams at the same time as Fucidin Cream (such as cosmetics or moisturisers), you should avoid applying these at the same time. This could dilute the fusidic acid, making it less effective. Ideally, you should leave about 30 minutes between applications, so that the products can each be absorbed without mixing on the skin.
You should always complete the course of treatment recommended by your doctor, even if it appears that the infection has cleared. However, you should not use Fucidin Cream for longer than 10 days.
If you are treating an infection on the face, take extra care to avoid getting Fucidin Cream in your eyes. If this occurs, you should rinse your eyes thoroughly with water.
This medicine is suitable for use in children, adults and the elderly.
You should not use this medicine if you have a known allergy to fusidic acid or any of the other ingredients. If you think you have experienced an allergic reaction, stop using the cream and consult your doctor for advice.
Because fusidic acid is not absorbed in significant amounts through the skin, it is safe to use this cream while you are pregnant.
You can use Fucidin Cream if you are breastfeeding, however it should not be used on or near the breasts to avoid accidental ingestion by the baby. If you do need to use it on or near your breasts, wash it off thoroughly before feeding your baby. If in doubt, seek advice from your doctor.
You should not use Fucidin Cream for longer than your doctor has prescribed. Prolonged use of antibacterial medicines can mean bacteria become resistant to the medicine and can also increase the risk of skin irritation.
