What is Flixonase Nasal Spray?
Flixonase Nasal Spray is a nasal spray used to prevent and treat the symptoms of hay fever (seasonal allergic rhinitis). It is also used to prevent and treat symptoms of nasal allergies caused by dust mites or pet allergies.
Flixonase Nasal Spray contains the active ingredient fluticasone propionate, a corticosteroid that reduces inflammation.
This nasal spray is suitable for adults and children aged 4 years and over. The lowest possible dose should be given to children aged 4-11 years.
How does Flixonase Nasal Spray work?
Our bodies naturally produce corticosteroids to control inflammatory responses. Flixonase Nasal Spray contains the active ingredient fluticasone propionate, a synthetic corticosteroid.
Symptoms of allergic rhinitis (hay fever) can include: sneezing; nasal congestion; sinus discomfort; red eyes; and, watery eyes.
These symptoms are caused by inflammation, which occurs when allergens such as pet fur or pollen cause cells in the lining of the nose to release histamine, which produces an allergic response.
Fluticasone is absorbed by these cells and prevents them from releasing histamine, breaking the chain of allergic response and relieving the symptoms.
It can take 3-4 days for this nasal spray to reach full effect. It is recommended that you start using the spray a few days before you are likely to encounter an allergen (e.g. just before pollen season begins).
You should then use the spray regularly when you are being exposed to the allergen in order to keep nasal inflammation under control.

What are the side effects of Flixonase Nasal Spray?

The most commonly reported side effect of this medicine is nosebleeds. Other less common side effects include headaches, dryness/irritation of the throat and nose, and an unpleasant taste or smell.

If you are concerned about any side effects, speak to your doctor.
What are the precautions/interactions of Flixonase Nasal Spray?
You should tell your doctor if you have recently used, or are using, any other medicines containing corticosteroids, including: creams and ointments; nasal sprays; eye drops; and, asthma inhalers.
Medicines such as itraconazole and ketoconazole (antifungals), telaprevir (for treating hepatitis C) and ritonavir/other protease inhibitors (for treating HIV) can reduce the speed at which your body breaks down fluticasone, increasing the risk of side effects.
You should avoid taking this medication alongside ritonavir. If you are taking antifungals, use this medicine with caution.
Do not use if you have recently had nasal surgery/sustained a nose injury, or if you have a sinus or nasal passage infection.
You should not use this nasal spray if you are allergic to corticosteroids, or any of the other ingredients. If you experience an allergic reaction, stop using this medicine and contact your doctor.
Pregnant women and breastfeeding mothers should seek advice from their doctor before using this medicine as its safety during pregnancy has not yet been established.
It should also be used with caution if you are breastfeeding, as it is not yet known whether active ingredients can be passed into breast milk.
