What are Migard 2.5mg Tablets?
Migard 2.5mg Tablets include the active ingredient frovatriptan, a painkiller specifically used to relieve migraine attacks. Frovatriptan is also known as a serotonin/5HT receptor agonist or 'triptan'. It provides relief once a migraine attack has started, but it cannot be used as a preventative measure for migraines.
These tablets are not effective in treating ophthalmoplegic, hemiplegic or basilar migraines.
How do Migard 2.5mg Tablets work?
Although the cause of migraine attacks is unclear, an increase in certain chemicals in the brain is thought to be the source. This increase causes blood vessels in the brain to widen, leading to a painful, throbbing headache, nausea and vomiting and sensitivity to light and sound. Each tablet contains the active ingredient frovatriptan.
Migard 2.5mg Tablets force these blood vessels to narrow and return to normal, thus relieving the pain.
Frovatriptan mimics the naturally occurring substance serotonin and stimulates the serotonin/5HT receptors, which causes the vessels to narrow.
These tablets will not prevent a headache from starting, rather they are taken to relieve symptoms once an attack has begun. You should take these tablets as soon as the pain begins (although they can be taken at a later stage). They should not be used in the 'aura' stage of a migraine.
