What is Warticon?

Warticon (Wartec) is available in a podophyllotoxin cream 1.5 mg/g (0.15% w/w)designed to treat genital warts safely and effectively through the use of podophyllotoxin, which is derived from the roots of the podophyllum plant. It is intended for the treatment of small, soft genital warts. Warticon is simple and safe to use, and is clinically proven to be an effective treatment for genital warts in the early stages of the infection.

What are the benefits of Warticon (Wartec)?

Warticon cream is a fast-acting treatment, clinically proven to eliminate genital warts safely and effectively. It also comes with a number of benefits, including:

  • The treatment is simple to apply in the privacy of your own home.
  • By applying the cream exactly as it is prescribed to you, you will be able to see the genital warts disappear in just four weeks.
  • Warticon cream is significantly faster than other treatments and medications available to treat genital warts.
  • Unlike other treatments, there are no timeframes concerning when the solution needs to be rinsed off your skin.

How to use Warticon (Wartec)

Warticon 1.5 mg/g (podophyllotoxin 0.15% w/w) is currently only available in a 3ml dosage, and is presented in a tube. To ensure you use this medication correctly, you should take the following steps:

  • Make sure the area to which you are applying the Warticon cream or solution is clean and dry.
  • Wash your hands before and after applying the treatment.
  • Apply the solution directly to the warts, so it coats the affected area in a thin film.
  • It is important not to use too much of the solution; make sure you are only using just enough to cover each wart.
  • You should do this twice daily for three consecutive days.

Further information as to the usage of the treatment can be found in the patient information leaflet. Ensure that this genital wart cream is only used for the treatment of genital warts and not other skin conditions.

How does Warticon work?

The active ingredient in Warticon (Wartec), podophyllotoxin, penetrates the wart tissue and targets the nucleus of the wart cells, which controls the reproduction of the cells. The podophyllotoxin has a toxic effect on this nucleus, which stops the cells from dividing and multiplying. Without this ability, the wart cells will die and be replaced by healthy cells.

Who can take Warticon?

Most adults are able to use Warticon genital wart cream safely and effectively. It is not advised to use Warticon cream or solution if you are sensitive or allergic to any of the ingredients contained in the treatment. It is also not suitable for children, pregnant women or women who are breastfeeding. If you have considerably large warts, or warts within the urinary tract, a more specialist treatment may be required.

What are the side effects of Warticon?

Warticon (Wartec) does contain a small risk of side effects, but any that do occur will most likely be very mild and brief. These can include soreness, inflammation and irritation of the application site.

More serious side effects, especially those associated with an allergic reaction such as hives, a rash, shortness of breath or facial swelling should be reported to a doctor immediately. However, these side effects are highly unlikely to occur, if at all.

If you feel you are experiencing these effects more severely, or if they do not fade, you should contact your GP when possible for further advice.
