What is Doxycycline?

Doxycycline is an antibiotic that is generally used in the treatment of sexually transmitted infections (STIs) and the prevention of malaria. In both instances, Doxycycline slows down the spread of the infection, making the bacteria or parasite responsible vulnerable, so that the body's immune system can fight it more effectively.

Doxycycline is particularly effective in the treatment of sexually transmitted infections caused by bacteria, such as chlamydia, non-specific urethritis and ureaplasma. Doxycycline is taken in a lower dose over a longer period of time, compared to STI treatments such as Azithromycin, which makes it less likely to cause side effects.

It is also often prescribed to people who are travelling to areas of the world where the malaria parasite has developed immunity to Paludrine and Avloclor. This preventative treatment works to kill the malaria parasite in the blood, before it causes the malaria disease.[1]

Doxycycline itself is available in several different salts. These include; Doxycycline hydrochloride (hyclate), Doxycycline monohydrate, doxycycline carrageenate, doxycycline calcium and doxycycline phosphate (fosfatex). The form of Doxycycline we have available to order contains Doxycycline hyclate.

Doxycycline is taken orally in the form of a 100mg tablet. It can be taken by men and women over the age of 18, who are dealing with malaria infection.

How does Doxycycline work?

Bacteria that cause sexually transmitted infections need to make protein to help it spread and stay alive, and Doxycycline inhibits its ability to do this. This gives your body's own immune system the help it needs to kill off the infection.

Similarly, Doxycycline prevents the malaria (plasmodium) parasite from multiplying once it's in the blood, which leaves it vulnerable against your body's natural defences. This action prevents the malaria parasite from reaching your liver, where it can cause long-term health problems.

What are the benefits of using Doxycycline?

Doxycycline is a wide spectrum antibiotic that is used for a broad range of infections, but it is particularly effective at curing sexually transmitted infections, such as chlamydia. There are a number of benefits that can be experienced when using Doxycycline tablets. These benefits are listed below:

  • When treating an STD, Doxycycline is effective in lower dosages
  • Can be prescribed to people who have experienced side effects when taking other antibiotics
  • Proven to prevent malaria in areas where the parasite has developed immunity to medications, such as Paludrine and Avloclor
  • Secondary benefit of treating other bacterial infections such as urinary tract infection, acne and bronchitis
  • Can effectively protect against all four different malaria parasites[2]

How to use Doxycycline?

To successfully treat non-specific urethritis, chlamydia and ureaplasma, one Doxycycline 100 mg tablet should be taken twice a day for seven days. This is the only dosage we currently have available. It is important to remember that you mustn't stop taking the medicine before the end of the prescribed treatment. To ensure that you are completely cured, we recommend performing another STI test at home, two weeks after completing the course.

To prevent a malaria infection, you should start taking one Doxycycline 100 mg tablet a day for two days before you intend on travelling, and then continue until the fourth week after you return.

Who can take Doxycycline?

Doxycycline tablets can be used to treat non-specific urethritis, chlamydia or ureaplasma and will help to prevent malaria in most healthy people. There may, however, be medications and medical conditions that may make it unsafe for you to buy Doxycycline. You should make sure to provide information about your health in as much detail as possible during your consultation.

Although there isn't conclusive evidence about its effect on pregnancy, it is often advised not to use Doxycycline when you are pregnant or if you are breastfeeding have a hereditary blood disorder or if you have had an allergic reaction to Doxycycline capsules in the past such as severe skin reactions or a swollen face/throat. If you are using an oral contraceptive such as the pill, it may not be effective when you use this treatment.

What are the side effects of Doxycycline?

As it is effective in lower doses, it is normally very well tolerated. The most common side effects are usually mild and may include:

  • Nausea, itching, vomiting, diarrhoea, indigestion or abdominal pain
  • Difficulty or pain when swallowing, skin rash, loss of appetite or flushing

Rarer side effects include difficulty breathing, redness of the eyes and throat irritation. Although it is unlikely, if any of these side effects do persist, you should contact a doctor or your local GP to inform them of your condition as soon as possible. If you do experience any severe reactions to the treatment such as face or throat swelling ensure you visit your doctor as soon as possible.

Precautions/interactions when taking Doxycycline?

It is important to take precaution when taking Doxycycline tablets, as certain drugs can negatively affect the way the treatment works. Drugs such as; antacids, calcium and iron supplements, penicillin, blood thinners, anti-seizure drugs and oral birth control pills should be avoided when using Doxycycline 100mg tablets.

Your skin may also become more sensitive to sunlight, which can be helped by taking extra precaution and protecting your skin from the sun, by using sunglasses, for example.

Doxycycline capsules may also upset your stomach, but taking the medication with food might help. It's possible to drink alcohol while taking Doxycycline, however, the alcohol might increase the risk of experiencing certain side effects, such as stomach pain.
