Telfast is a non-sedating antihistamine. It is used to treat allergies, such as hay fever, conjunctivitis and eczema. The main benefit of this medication is that it alleviates the symptoms of hay fever, without inducing drowsiness. This means it is possible to continue to perform daily activities, including driving and operating machinery, without the discomfort of seasonal allergies.
However, it should also be noted, a very small proportion of those taking Telfast do still experience drowsiness. You should therefore consider your individual reaction to this treatment first, before undertaking any risky activity.
Telfast is also available as a generic treatment, Fexofenadine. Both treatments are identical in their pharmaceutical makeup and the effect they have on the body,
The active ingredient of this medication is the antihistamine 'fexofenadine hydrochloride'. As its name suggests, an antihistamine combats the effects of 'histamine'. This is a compound your body produces when it believes it is under threat from a harmful substance (such as pollen) which causes blood vessels to expand and skin to swell. This swelling results in inflammation in the nasal passage and eyes.
Telfast blocks receptors so that histamine cannot induce the uncomfortable symptoms of nasal congestion, sneezing, itchy nose, etc.
One 120mg tablet should be taken daily, with water and just preceding a meal. It normally takes around 1 hour for effects to be noticed, with symptoms being alleviated for approximately 24 hours. Please do not exceed the recommended dosage of 1 tablet per day. If you miss a dose, continue as normal the following day.
If you find you suffer from any serious side effects, discontinue treatment immediately and inform your doctor.
